Years ago, as a real estate agent, I sold a mobile home on
a lot for $31,000. The seller was crying at closing. Her husband
wasn't there, the buyer refused to pay for heating oil left in
the tank, and I was in the middle. (I never did like selling
real estate.) An agent from another broker had found the buyer,
so my share of the commission on this sale was only $542.50.
Later, I sold a home for $159,000. Again, another broker found
the buyer, so I received 1/4 of the 7% commission, or $2,782.50.
Five times as much money for less work. It took me two seconds
to recognize the lesson many agents never learn: sell higher-priced
homes!
This is obvious perhaps, but it is amazing how many agents
feel like there is something more difficult about selling higher
priced homes (I found it to be less work). Either that,
or they just haven't done the math to see how much more they
can make for their time. The best agents know better.
There are important insider principles like this in every
industry. I'll give a few more examples, to get you thinking
about how to look for these secrets.
Tricks of the Trades - Examples
* My carpet cleaner friend spends hours moving things, every
move being watched, to make $275 on a home job. When he cleans
one of his commercial accounts, it's easier, and after five hours
of work, he bills the company $1,200. The lesson: Look for big
empty spaces to clean. Get commercial accounts!
* NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) practitioners know how
to change a person's state of mind quickly. I did this with a
"pattern interrupt" technique once, while shopping
with a two-year-old. Nothing would stop her crying, until I said,
"There's your mom!" The tears stopped instantly, as
she looked around. "Oh, no, that's not her," I added
quickly, but by then she had forgotten why she was crying. I
cover much more powerful techniques in the book.
* A border guard once asked where I worked. "Leelanau
Sands Casino," I said. "Oh, near Cadillac?" he
asked casually. "North of Traverse City," I corrected
him, thinking nothing of it. Later I realized he knew exactly
where it was, but he knew that if I didn't, I probably
would have said, "Yeah, that's the one." (In the bonus

go into more detail on how to use this lie-detecting technique.)
* An e-book is usually bought by less than 1% of website visitors.
A free mini-course gives them several chances to buy, often doubling
the "conversion rate." This is a valuable insider technique.
It also can be a valuable source of free information for subscribers.
For example, I'm getting a real estate mini-course at the
moment. I buy many information products (best values out there),
but I have enough real estate books for now, so I probably won't
buy the $500 success system that the e-course promotes. I can
tell you from experience that the author won't mind if I just
use a few of the great tips in his free course (and I'll be happy
if you use some of this info). In any case, there will be some
subscribers who can use more information, and they'll buy the
$500 system (and hopefully use it to make tens of thousands of
dollars).
Over the years I have learned many secrets from free newsletters
that all promoted some bigger better product. Some of those products I bought, and some I didn't. But
in any case the free information alone has made me money, saved
me money, cured medical problems, and improved my life in many
ways.
