Secret Information
By Steve Gillman
Secret information? Maybe not
much remains truly hidden or forbidden anymore, but there are
always important little secrets about how things work. Salesmen,
politicians, and others learn and use subtle techniques to influence
you. "Lucky people" use little-known tricks to get
that way. Here are some examples.
Controlling Through Words
There is a classic joke, "Have
you stopped beating your wife?" It is difficult to answer
without incriminating yourself. This technique of the implicit
premise is used by politicians for more than jokes. Get everyone
to argue about how to do something, for example, like win the
the "war" on drugs, and nobody questions if it should
even be done. Implicit premises are a powerful method of control.
Get in the habit of recognizing the premises hidden in political
debate.
Another way to influence people
is to control language. Since social security payments don't
come from actual investments, unless you call the government
lending itself money "investing", social security isn't
a "retirement fund." Calling it that, however, makes
it seem safer and more acceptable than what it is: welfare. You
can see how the words used control the debate.
Our words matter greatly. Could
it be difficult politically to spend millions on "human
shredder" bombs? Maybe that's why they are called "daisy
cutters." Start paying attention, and you'll see how words
are being used to influence you.
Hypnotic Sales Techniques
Read the following sales pitch:
"Does speaking before a
crowd make you nervous? What if it was easy? Imagine standing
there in front of a crowd, knowing exactly what to say to make
them love you. Wouldn't that feel wonderful? Just apply our simple
methods, and you will have that power. Use the form below to
ORDER RIGHT NOW."
It starts by getting you to say
yes, which is habit forming. It hints at the possibility of a
solution. The word "Imagine," in line three, gets you
doing just that. Line four suggests positive emotion and gets
another yes. "And" in line five infers cause and effect,
that you'll have the power BECAUSE you used their product. The
last line directs you with "Use the form below." The
"order right now" is called an "embedded command,"
because putting it in capitals influences you without you noticing
consciously.
When I learned dozens of these
techniques, I used them to rewrite the sign-up page for one of
my newsletters, and I started to get four times as many subscribers
from the same traffic. Secret information or not, it is powerful
stuff.
More Secret Information
"Lucky people" create
the right conditions for "luck," by being in the right
place, and around people who can help. Good salesmen use techniques
like "mirroring," and "leading," to persuade
you. Research from the new science of behavioral economics is
applied by smart marketers to create methods of getting you to
buy.
Secret information isn't all
about influencing others. Most industries and human activities
have little-known "tricks of the trade." Wise real
estate agents sell expensive homes, for example, because they
know it takes the same work as selling a mobile home, but the
commission can be five times as much. Those who don't use this
"secret" struggle to make a living.
Certainly, subliminal techniques
and other "forbidden knowledge" can be used for good
or bad, so are they dangerous? Yes, especially if you're not
in on the secret. Why not start to gather some of your own secret
information?

How To Tell If Someone
Is Lying
By Steve Gillman
How do you tell if someone is
lying? Carefully. All methods of lie-detecting, including polygraph
machines, are regularly fooled or used improperly, resulting
in mistakes. So use the methods described here, but try to confirm
the truth by other means as well, such as confession or investigation
of the facts.
You should compare behavior in
the person under suspicion to their "base" behavior,
if possible. In other words, if they always have shifty eyes,
then this trait can't be considered as an indication of lying.
On the other hand, if they are normally very calm under pressure,
but start shifting in their chair after certain questions, that
may indicate lying. Because all techniques fail at times, you
should use several indications before assuming the person has
lied.
How To Tell If Someone Is
Lying By Testing Responses
One way to test for lying, is
to measure a persons desire to avoid a subject, which will sometimes
indicate dishonesty or guilt. If you think the person is lying,
change the subject quickly. A lying person will often go along
easily, and may even visibly relax. An innocent person is more
likely to be slightly confused by the change and want to finish
their thoughts.
Another lie detecting technique
is to suggest something that would make a guilty person feel
uncomfortable and watch for a response. Suppose your wife Jane
says she was at her mother's house, and you think she is lying.
Rather than saying, "I'm calling your mother to verify this,"
you could use a subtle approach. You might say, "That reminds
me, I'm going to stop by your mother's house today to fix that
door for her."
If your wife was lying, the idea
of you seeing her mother should make her nervous. She may give
you reasons why you shouldn't go there. Of course, if your relationship
has reached the point where you feel the necessity to resort
to these techniques, a simple lie may not be the worst of your
problems. Still, sometimes you need to know, so here are a few
more ways to tell if someone is lying.
They are using your words. Using
your exact words to respond can be an indication of lying. You
say, for example, "Did you leave this here?" and they
respond, "No, I did not leave this here."
They use un-contracted words.
A lack of contractions is more common when lying. For example,
instead of saying "I didn't sleep with her," a man
might say," I did not have sexual relations with that woman."
Again, compare to base behavior, though, as some people may not
use contractions often anyhow.
Over-compensation. Often when
people lie, they try too hard to be natural, and they give more
detail than is necessary.
Forced smiles. A real smile involves
more muscles, while a forced smile will use just the muscles
around the mouth. The lie here may only be about their feelings,
of course.
Let them talk. The more a person
talks, the more likely you are to catch them in a lie (if they
are being dishonest), especially when you learn the indications
to watch for. These are just a few of the ways how to tell if
someone is lying.

Five Lies You Are Being
Told
By Steve Gillman
We hear lies all the time. Of
course we know that when a politician says "no new taxes,"
he is lying. But then there are the more subtle lies that aren't
so easily spotted. Here are five lies you should watch out for.
The Bigger Size Is Always
Cheaper
It used to be true. The "family"
or "institutional" cans, jars and packages of food
are supposed to cost less per ounce. But some retailers have
recently been overpricing large items knowing that many will
assume they are the better buy without doing the math. Look at
the price per ounce or pound.
News Can Be Objective
There are unlimited "stories,"
but limited time or paper. Should a reporter cover the building
of a new school, or the opening of a new clothing store, or the
famine in some African country? Even if every fact is correct,
choosing to cover one story over another reveals a bias, as does
choosing how to cover it. It is better to simply understand what
those biases are than to pretend that news can be objective.
Alternative Medicine Is Dangerous
Dangerous compared to what? Heart
doctors have thousands die on the operating table and no one
says a thing. If one person dies from after using an herb, though
- even if thousands have been saved by it - there are calls for
it to be banned. All treatments have their risks, but let's be
fair in our comparisons.
Statistics Are Objective
It is all in how they are used.
If an oil company's profit on assets rises from 4% one year to
8% the next, did profits rise by 4% or 100%? That depends on
who's counting. Rising 4% to an 8% profit still leaves them below
the profit levels of most businesses, they might honestly point
out. Of course, they did make a 100% more money this year, a
reporter might note, to whip up an anti-oil company "story".
If It Saves One Life It's
Worth It
Each of us can rightfully put
unlimited value on our own lives. Actions to save others lives,
though, have to take into account the cost. As a nation, we could
save 45,000 lives by strictly limiting highway speeds to 20 miles
per hour, but that is too high a price for us. The question then,
is how much is it actually worth to us to save a life. Looked
at in this honest way, more lives will be saved, because regulations
will be aimed at maximum efficiency in achieving results.
There are hundreds of common
lies that we are told by "experts," politicians, and
salesmen. Sometimes we can spot the lie a mile away, and other
times they are subtle and believable. Sometimes they are lies
we want to hear.

Eye Tricks
By Steve Gillman
What kind of eye tricks? What
can you do with your eyes? More on that in a moment. First, let's
look at what you can tell by watching another person's persons
eyes.
By watching what they are watching,
you can learn a lot about people. What kind of women does a man
look at? Does he pay any attention to the game on the TV? Note
whether he seems bored or interested as he looks at different
things.
Eye watching tricks - part two.
You can tell what people's minds are doing when they are thinking
or asked to remember something, according to neuro-linguistic
programming (NLP) practitioners. This following is true for most
right handed people (reverse all this for left-handed people):
As you face them, and their eyes go...
Up and to the right - They are
remembering a visual image.
Up and to the left - They are
constructing a visual image.
To the right - They are remembering
sounds or conversation.
To the left - The are constructing
sounds or conversations.
Down and to the right - They
are in an internal dialog.
Down and to the left - They are
accessing kinesthetic feelings, tastes and smells.
Eye Tricks And The Opposite
Sex
A persons pupils get bigger when
they are aroused, interested and/or receptive. If you look into
his or her eyes and see those pupils growing large - it's looking
good for you. Basically big pupils (unless it's just dark) mean
a person likes what they see.
It isn't just what you see, though,
but what you imagine too. Try an experiment to understand how
immediate this effect can be. Go right now and look in the mirror
at your own eyes. As you look at them, imagine a sexy man or
woman you are attracted to - in whatever way would turn you on.
You'll see that your pupils get
bigger in just seconds. Actually, if you love to fish, they may
get big just thinking about a lake you love. Imagining anything
you like to look at can make your pupils bigger.
You'll find that you can quickly
train yourself to change your pupil size at will. Just find a
mental image or two that gets them really big, and use these
as necessary. Look at a light briefly when you want to shrink
your pupils back down. Now, how do you use this eye trick?
First, understand that we all
unconsciously use little clues like pupil size as we interact
with people. We are affected by people's body language even when
we haven't yet learned to identify it. There are reasons why
we are attracted to a person, even when we don't know what those
reasons are.
In other words - the person in
front of you will unconsciously pick upon your enlarging pupils.
They will unconsciously take this to mean that you like them,
and for many people, this will make them like you more. By enlarging
your pupils at will, you can effectively establish rapport more
quickly. This is one of the easier subliminal eye tricks.

Used Car Buying Tips
By Steve Gillman
Some of these used car buying
tips won't be new to you. That's okay, because we all need reminding,
and sometimes a stimulus to apply what you already know. On the
other hand, when it comes to expensive areas of life like buying
a car, learn just one new thing and you can save hundreds of
dollars. Try one or more of the following.
1. Make a low offer. Okay, you
knew this one. A trick you may not have used, though, is to make
a low offer, and then leave your phone number with the seller.
Time has a way of making sellers desperate, especially after
you just helped convince them that they are asking too much.
2. Be careful with car price
guides. Use the "blue book" etc, but try not to pay
more than wholesale. I can't think of many times when people
I know have paid more than "bluebook," so these "average"
sales prices are doubtful.
3. Talk to people. This is one
of the simplest and effective used car buying tips. Just let
friends, family and others know you're looking for a car. Quite
often people would be happy to avoid the whole process of advertising
and showing their car if they could just get rid of it by giving
a good deal to a friend.
4. Check out the engine. Have
a mechanic look at the car, and tell you what it's likely to
need in the next year or so. Then make a list, so the seller
can see in writing why you are offering less than he wants.
5. Auctions. See if there is
a public auction in your area. If not, maybe you can go with
a dealer friend and give him a $100 to buy a car for you.
6. www.carfax.com. It's around
$25 to run vehicle background checks for a month - long enough
to find your next car. They'll show the chain of title, accident
reports for the car, and even safety and reliability scores for
that model.
7. "Ugly" cars. Watch
for cars that sit on the lot for months. Dealers will often sell
these "ugly ducklings" at a loss just to move them.
Again, you may want to leave your phone number with a low offer.
8. Rental company cars. They
are sold fairly cheap when they get the new ones in. Buy at bluebook
wholesale or less, because they have had many different drivers,
so they've more wear than normal.
9. Repos. Credit unions and some
small banks do their own selling of repossessed cars. You usually
bid on paper, maybe with a $50 deposit, and then get your $50
back if you're not the winning bidder. If they don't sell their
own repossessions, ask where they are sold.
10. Consider gas mileage. High
mileage may be better, but maybe a car that costs $500 less will
use only $400 more gas in the two years you expect to own it.
Do the math.
Use the tips here the next time
you are shopping for a used car. Meanwhile, why not learn a few
negotiating strategies. This helps in many areas of life, and
is the most important of these used car buying tips.
These are some of the 400 ways
to save money in the bonus "Money Saving Secrets" that

Credit Card Tips
By Steve Gillman
There are little known tricks
that credit card companies play on you, as well as tricks you
can use to get rid of fees and pay off your debt sooner. Here
are some of the best credit card tips, tricks and secrets.
1. You can get rid of annual
fees. If you have good credit, just call and ask for fee to be
removed. This worked on three out of four cards I called on,
and I just dumped the other. Of course threatening to cancel
the cards helped get the fees dropped.
2. Read the fine print, and pay
on time. Be aware that under "universal default" rules,
if you are late on one card, your interest rate can be increased
on other cards as well. They love to get you with this one.
3. Watch for changing due dates.
This is a trick used by some credit card companies to get you
to pay late, so they can collect the late fees. They will also
be able to raise your rate, and the rate on other cards you may
have. Don't assume that your payment due date will always be
the same.
4. Use promotional checks with
care. Transferring balances to 0 interest promotions can be a
good idea, but watch out for those that charge "balance
transfer fees." Transferring a balance that you were going
to pay off soon anyhow will just cost you more if there is a
3% transfer fee.
5. Try credit unions for cards.
Their cards usually have lower rates. My credit union Visa rate
hasn't been over 10% in years, and I have zero liability for
unauthorized charges.
6. Ask to have the late fee waived.
If you've never been late before, some credit card companies
will waive a late fee - but only if you ask. Why not try it?
All it takes is a phone call.
7. Pay in full every month. Credit
cards are for convenience, not for hiding the true cost of things.
Don't pay interest - just pay the balance every month.
8. Don't buy the credit card
insurance. This typically stops your payments when you are injured
or unemployed. It is one of the most over-priced insurances out
there, and doesn't eliminate the debt, but just delays it.
9. Avoid credit card security
insurance. It pays for unauthorized charges when your card is
stolen, but you are only liable for the first $50 if you report
the theft in any case, and many cards already have 0 liability.
10. Pay high-interest cards first
to reduce credit card debt. If you have $200 monthly to apply
to your credit card debt, pay only the minimums only on all cards
but the card with the highest interest rate. Put all the rest
of the money towards that one. Once that one is paid off, work
on the next highest. This is the fastest way to get rid of your
credit card debt, and the most important of these credit card
tips.

Top Secret Persuasion
Techniques
By Steve Gillman
Some of the best persuasion techniques
have been developed from NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) methods.
For example, if you hear a person saying, "I see,"
a few times, they are probably processing information visually,
according to NLP. To influence them then, you would use phrases
like, "You can see how..." or you would actually show
them things. A more auditory person would be influenced by, "I
hear what you're saying," and "Listen."
Notice if they use visual, aural,
or kinesthetic words. If you want to convince your spouse to
go to the Bahamas, it makes a difference which words you use.
"We'll be feeling that sun on our backs," is not the
same as "We'll see sunny beaches," or We'll listen
to the waves at night." You may use all of these, but one
of the three types of words will be more influential for most
people.
More Persuasion Techniques
1. Use a person's name.
You have undoubtedly heard salesmen
use and abuse this technique. Maybe a statement like "Look
Steve, you can see the benefits of this..." just turns you
off. Using a person's name IS a powerful persuasion technique,
but there is more subtlety and art to persuasion than just following
simple rules.
People do love to hear their
own name, but you have to be careful how you use it. First of
all, use it how they want to hear it. Ask how they prefer to
be addressed. A Mike may not like "Michael," and a
Joseph may be irritated by you calling him "Joe."
Second, use it at the right time.
Unless you are great at reading people and know it is okay, don't
say "Hi Betty!" the moment she walks into your office.
Wait until there is a bit of rapport, and sometimes even ask
permission ("Is it okay if I call you Betty?").
2. Use motivating words.
Say "think about,"
they'll do that. It is not a call to action. Use words like "today,"
and "now," and "do this." Many subliminal
experts will tell you that even using "by now," repetitively,
as in "By now you can see that this car is luxurious,"
is subconsciously taken as "buy now."
Remember to use THEIR words.
If they use the word "efficient" often, then it's an
important word to them. Start using it: "You can see how
efficient this RV is in it's use of space." Pay attention
and pick out any words they use often. Persuasion is easier when
you speak the same "language."
3. Be a chameleon.
Change your language to more
closely match theirs. Slow or accelerate your speech to match
theirs. Sit in the same position that they sit in. Use the same
facial expressions. Laugh when they laugh.
This technique is called "mirroring
and matching," and, when done well, you can establish rapport
quickly and easily with most people. Most people will never notice
you're doing this, but don't be too obvious. The person will
just feel like you're like they are, that you can "relate"
to them. A bond will begin to develop between you, and you can
test this bond by "leading."
This means that once you have
established the bond, you can change your body posture, to see
if they unconsciously do the same. If so, they are ready to follow.
You continue to mirror and match, but you also start to lead
them right to the bottom line on the contract, or to whatever
action you want them to take. This is one of the more powerful
persuasion techniques.

Find People For Free
By Steve Gillman
How do you find people for free?
To avoid hiring an expensive private investigator, learn how
to do your own investigating. Here are a couple techniques to
get you started.
People are creatures of habit.
Even when they are willing to give up their names, and move far
away, they rarely are willing to change who they are. A bowler
will still want to bowl. If you suspected which city he may have
moved to, you could call bowling alleys there to get information
on new league members. If I moved and changed my name, you could
find me where people gather to play chess. Think of all their
habits, and how these might predict their behavior and location.
Most of the time, though, people
you try to find aren't really trying to hide. At least, they
aren't trying very hard. Maybe they have left town and keep their
phone number unlisted, but they probably haven't changed their
name. How do you find them quickly? Here are some techniques.
Find People For Free With
Skip Tracing Techniques
"Skip tracing" is tracking
down people who have "skipped" out of town, or otherwise
disappeared. This was the part of my job that I enjoyed when
I was a bill collector years ago. It is much easier today with
the use of the internet, but the principles remain the same.
The basic things you start with
are things like sending mail to any addresses you have and calling
any phone numbers you have for the person. When you send a letter,
you pay a little extra for "address correction." The
post office will return a card to you with any forwarding address
they have on file for the subject.
When you call their phone number(s),
if you get an answer, you of course want to ask for the subject.
If they have moved, you want to get any information you can from
the person on the line. Use basic phone pretexts for this.
Find People With Phone Pretexts
These are useful stories. They
can be as simple as "Hi, this is Dave. I'm an old friend
of John's. Do you know where I can find him?" Be prepared,
of course for a question or two, like. "Where do you know
John from?"
More complicated pretexts might
involve a temptation like, "I have a rebate check for $50
on a car stereo here that John never claimed. Do you have his
address, so I can just drop it in the mail today?" If they
refuse or claim they don't know where he is, give them your number
and ask if they could give it to John if they talk to him.
Get any information you can while
you have a person on the phone. They may refuse to give you an
address or phone number, but then mention the city that the subject
has moved to. Ask them who else might help you, and call those
people. Using the phone is the easiest and fastest ways to find
people for free.

Subliminal Persuasion
By Steve Gillman
Subliminal persuasion? It is
simply influencing people at a level below their conscious recognition.
Many people don't even realize they are being influenced by a
smile, making even that a subliminal technique. Here are two
more subtle methods.
Subliminal Persuasion Using
Inflection
It is easy to assume that a sentence
like "I can't promise you that price." has only one
meaning. In reality, though, inflection provides much of the
actual meaning. Look at the each of the sentences below, each
with a different word emphasized, and followed by the implied
meaning.
I
can't promise you that price. (But maybe someone can.)
I CAN'T promise you that
price. (There's no way.)
I can't PROMISE you that
price. (But maybe you'll get it.)
I can't promise YOU that
price. (But I can promise someone else.)
I can't promise you THAT
price. (But maybe a good price.)
I can't promise you that PRICE.
(But I can promise something.)
The meaning of our statements
is determined by which words we emphasize, and it is a subtle
process. If you can't promise him that price, you can tell him
"I can't promise you that PRICE," and he may still
feel good about the situation, especially if you immediately
follow with what you can promise him. You probably know what
you want to say. Understanding the subtle and often subliminal
power of inflection will mean you actually say it.
Subliminal Persuasion Using
Their Own Words
Restate what a person has said
they want, and then show them how you can give them that. We
all need to have some internal consistency, so we don't like
to act against what we say. This is why, as long as you have
what they need, this technique works well. For an example, we'll
suppose you are selling a prospect a vacation.
After listening to what they
want, you find something that fits their needs, and then say,
"If I remember right, you said you wanted a warm beach,
under $2,000 for the week, and with nearby nightlife. I think
we're in luck. Both of the packages we just looked at fit your
criteria, so do you like Cancun or the Bahamas better?"
It is tough for someone to say
they are not interested when you just found exactly what they
said they wanted, and reminded them of their words. They probably
won't even notice that you are using their exact words. They'll
just feel uncomfortable contradicting what they said, and find
it easier to agree. That's subliminal persuasion.

Little Secrets
By Steve Gillman
Little secrets can be useful.
An example is knowing that hotel mattresses are less worn and
more comfortable on the side away from the phone. Or knowing
that listening to Mozart's sonata for Two Pianos in D Major,
K. 448 for ten minutes can raise your IQ 9 points.
They can also be just interesting.
Did you know that the furthest point from the center of the earth
isn't Everest, but the top of Mount Chimborazo, in Ecuador (due
to the bulge in the planet near the equator)? Useful or interesting
- here are some little secrets that are a little of both.
- Find money in bibles. Hotel
owners report that visitors tuck money in the bedside bible,
and forget to take it with them. Check those bibles!
- Find treasure in hotel rooms.
Treasure hunters have found that businessmen take off and hide
their wedding rings in hotel rooms, before they head to the bars.
They sometimes forget them when they check out. Where would you
hide something? There may already be something there.
- Reduce debt with a letter.
In a truly tough situation, write a nice letter to creditors,
asking them if they would accept 30% (or 50%, or whatever) of
your balance as payment in full, if you can raise the cash before
filing bankruptcy. They know they'll get nothing if you file.
I have seen more than one person eliminate a large chunk of their
debt in this way. A lawyer or "representative" can
write it for you, and they may pay more attention.
- To always have something interesting
to say, train yourself to look at things from other perspectives.
What would the Buddha say about this? How would a Martian view
it? What's the opposite perspective? The point is to see what
interesting ideas result. Do this until it's a habit, and you'll
always have something interesting to add to a conversation.
- Book two flights to save big
bucks. When I was going to Ecuador, I checked several web sites
that claimed "cheap international airfare." The cheapest
from Traverse City, Michigan (where I lived at the time) to Quito,
Ecuador, was $1720. Out of curiosity, I checked Miami to Quito:
only $404. Traverse City to Miami: $299. $703 total! Book two
separate flights and save more than $1000! The discount sites
aren't set up to check in this way for you, so you have to do
this on your own.
- If you have good credit, you
don't have to pay annual fees on credit cards. Call and ask for
the fee to be removed. I first did this years ago. On three out
of four cards, they dropped the fee. For the fourth, I dropped
the card. In fact the threat of closing the account is what got
the fees dropped on the others. There are many of these little

gone in about six weeks. There are reasons that doctors don't
tell us these little secrets.
